Laws that promote gender equality "will help the Arab region move forward on the issue of justice and equality for women", Jordan Ambassador to the UN Sima Bahous, told UN News after chairing the forum centered around the study with the same name: Gender and Law Justice, Evaluation of Laws Affecting Gender Equality in the Arab States.

Women's representation in political decision-making continues to rise slowly, with slight improvements since 2017, according to the data presented in the 2019 edition of the biennial IPU-UN Women map of Women in Politics. The map was launched at a press conference during the Commission on the Status.

UN human rights experts are urging Saudi Arabia to "immediately and unconditionally" release all women human rights defenders, including six imprisoned on charges relating to their peaceful defence of human rights. The detained have been charged for being involved in pro-democracy demonstrations, and previously campaigning for the right of women to vote and drive.

We welcome King Salman's decree allowing women to drive, and trust that this now starts the journey to substantive equality for women and girls in Saudi Arabia, with more access to public spaces and life, increased participation in the job market and a life free of violence in all spheres.
