On the margins of the 63rd session of the Commission on the Status of Women, a high-level side event on "Accelerating the elimination of harmful practices to reap the demographic dividend in Africa" convened Member States, civil society, youth and development partners to discuss decisive measures to eliminate child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) across the continent.
"The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too." So said Rose Schneiderman, a prominent trade union leader of the early 1900s. That's the motto of Bread and Roses, whose founders Sneh Jani and Olivia Head believe in helping refugee women to flourish through training and employment.
While the gender ratio between female and male diplomats at the United Nations is becoming more balanced overall, the number of women ambassadors in the Security Council has fallen from its peak of six women in 2014 to four in 2015 to just one this year.
