International Day of the Girl Child
The world’s 1.1 billion girls are part of a vast and vibrant global generation poised to take on the future and investing in girl’s education, health and safety during times of peace and crisis would help address the disadvantages, and discrimination girls face everywhere - all over the world – daily.
Observed annually on 11 October, this year’s International Day of the Girl Child theme is EmPOWER girls: emergency response and resilience planning. It also marks the beginning of a yearlong, multi-sector and partner effort by UNICEF to spur global attention and action to the challenges girls face before, during, and after crises, from access to education and skill-building to reproductive health and gender-based violence.
On 19 December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child. Every year, this day focuses on the need to empower young girls and the fulfillment of their human rights and make sure all girls have a safe, educational and healthy living situation.
